Hello,
this is Channel Ace.
Last time, I introduced the Virago (XV1100) engine oil change timing and recommended oil.
The oil change is an essential part of regular maintenance.
If you ask a shop, it will cost you a lot of money.
That’s why I always do my own for oil and filter changes.
I updated the work scenery.
What needs for the oil change?
First of all, as a MUST to do an oil change for XV1100 4PP,
● 17 mm wrench (to remove the drain bolt)
● Waste oil disposal box (to catch and dispose of oil from the drain)
● Waste cloth (to wipe up spilled oil)
That’s basically it.
Next, if you want to replace the oil filter,
● 14 mm wrench (to remove the step)
● 5mm hex wrench (to remove the oil filter cover)
● Brand new oil filter
● (Gasket: It depends on the condition, but I think it’s OK not to necessarily replace it)
that’s all.
Let’s drain the engine oil
4 steps to drain old engine oil.
1. Start the engine with idling and warm it up for about 5 minutes.
2. Stop the engine.
3. Prepare a waste oil disposal box.
4. Remove the drain bolt in the photo with a 17mm wrench.
When the drain bolt comes off, the oil will come out.
It is better to anticipate this and place the waste oil disposal box where the oil will fall.
After about 10 minutes, the oil should be gone.
Let’s change the oil filter
After draining the oil, replace the oil filter.
To remove the oil filter,
Since the step is in the way, first remove the step.
Using a 14mm wrench, remove the two nuts as shown in the picture.
Once the step comes off, use a 5mm hex wrench to remove the 3 bolts holding the oil filter cover.
Now remove the oil filter cover.
In my case, the cover was stuck, so I couldn’t get it off easily.
I removed the cover by tapping it with a plastic hammer.
Even if you remove the cover, I don’t think oil will come out.
Make sure to put the filter in the correct direction.
You can see that the upper filter is old and quite dirty.
By the way, the protruding part under the new filter is insert it so that it comes to the front.
Since there are two O-rings on the oil filter cover,
Please check before installation.
After inserting the oil filter,
Then just assemble in the reverse order of disassembly.
By the way, the assembly torque is
● Oil filter cover 3-point bolt (10Nm)
● Step nut (55Nm)
Let’s pour the engine oil
The final step is to add engine oil.
1. Tighten the 17mm drain bolt. (Tightening torque: 43Nm)
2. Remove the oil plug.
3. Add oil.
Oil change only: 3 liters
When replacing the oil filter: 3.1 liters
To keep my budget down,
I cut a plastic bottle in half to make a spout.
Tighten the oil plug after pouring oil.
Finally, start the engine and warm it up for about 5 minutes.
Stop the engine and place the after confirming that there is an oil level and that there are no oil leaks, you are done.
Summary
Thank you for your reading this!
The most difficult part in this work is where to pour the engine oil? I wonder if
I introduced a plastic bottle as a device to pour without spilling.
If you don’t have this, fill an empty milk carton with engine oil, then
If you pour it into a motorcycle, you can put it in without spilling.
In summary, the preparation is key.
In particular, I want to prepare to throw away old oil and do it well for the environment.
Even an amateur like me can do it in less than an hour,
If you are ready, you can easily replace it.
I would appreciate it if you could refer to it.
I will contact you again when I upload it to Youtube.
I would like to connect with XV1100 owners and other bikers,
If you are reading this blog,
Feel free to reply me your message in the comment section!
Thank you!
