XV1100 all paint – paiting and finishing –

バイク日記

Hello,

this is Channel Ace.

It’s been half a year since I became an XV1100 owner.

I spend an overwhelming amount of time fiddling with it rather than riding it.

It’s fun to ride, but if you spend more time facing the bike,

Attachment also springs up more and more.

That’s why I’ve been writing a paint blog since last time.

I would like to finally show off the finished product.

Selection of spray cans

If you have a compressor, buy paint, mix each color,

By squeezing or changing the nozzle, you can arrange the color and texture,

I thought that it would cost a lot of money to pursue it that far, so I decided to use a spray can.

This time, while leaving a little paint on the XV1100,

I will start painting without primer.

(So, to make it easier to paint,

The emery cloth is set to #400, which is slightly rough. )

In order, coloring → clear finish.

The important thing is the compatibility of each paint.

Roughly speaking, the types of paint are:

Available in enamel, lacquer, acrylic and urethane.

Each feature has been introduced on many other sites, so I will omit it.

If you do not use the basics in order from the left, the coating may not adhere well.

(For example, if you try to put lacquer on a urethane base, there are cases where it is useless.)

I want to finish with urethane clear considering gasoline resistance and strength of the paint film,

Other than that, there was a very cheap acrylic paint sold online, so I stopped by.

It was written that this paint was for marking, but it was cheap (300 yen/piece),

I decided to do my best with this!

I bought black and gold. “I had a hard time finding money, and this is what I finally found!”

Black is the main color, and gold is for lines and logos.

3 black and 1 gold. This is more than enough to paint one Virago.

This spray can is stingy and tries to blow to the end,

Something like a camel’s brim will come out, so please go to the new one before that!

I feel like I’m using about 80%.

From coloring gold as liner

Below is the completed coloring.

First, paint from gold, which will be the line.

After painting gold, paint black next, so

Protect only the part where you want to keep the gold color with line tape (5 mm) so that the black color does not get on. ↓

The line tape is

Nichiban’s clear line tape (for curves) is recommended.

When pulling the line tape, extend it about 30 cm and stick it on the starting point.

While pulling the line tape a little, with the hand placed at the starting point

I think the tape will do the trick.

If you don’t like it, you can peel and stick it several times,

It might be a good idea to work on it while making minor adjustments.

For the YAMAHA logo part, I bought ↓ at a certain auction and pasted it.

After painting the logo in black, I applied this tape and painted it in gold.

The light blue part is masked.

The outside of YAMAHA was masked with newspaper.

But this logo tape didn’t work at all. . .

This is the state of peeling off after painting gold. ↓

The tape was too thin and the gold paint on top came off in some areas.

After all, using this as a guide, cut the line tape finely and proceed to repair work. ↓

The outside is masked with newspaper, and only the YAMAHA part is painted gold again.

Let it dry thoroughly and remove the line tape with a precision screwdriver to complete. ↓

Urethane clear finish

For the finish, I purchased Holtz urethane clear.

I think two of these should be enough.

Before spraying the clear coat, lightly rub it with #2000 water-resistant paper to remove the unevenness of the paint.

I think that the condition will be beautiful after putting clear.

For clear, first spray a thin coating on the entire surface.

It feels quite sticky, so I don’t think it will drip unless it’s very sticky.

For the second time, spray slowly so that the paint film is fully covered.

Lacquer for painting will drip if you slow down like this.

I think it’s okay to say so. (At your own risk.)

By the way, it was about 35°C that day.

Polishing after the clear painting

After clearing, it’s time to polish and shine!

I get so excited when I do this.

I used 99 workshop compound.

Finally, apply wax and you’re done! !

All paint is done!!

Below is the before and after:

We can’t believe it’s the same bike.

Black color can be seen everywhere, but this line is like no other.

It is a world of self-satisfaction.

Summary

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Painting with a spray can doesn’t work very well.

I think that there are many people who have experienced that.

First of all, it is important to prepare the groundwork. I hope you spend a lot of time on this.

Next, paint is the speed of moving your hands. If it is applied quickly, it will not drip, but the coating film is thin and the surface is rough. Conversely, if you move your hand slowly, it will drip easily, but the painted surface will be clean.

Aim for this Hazama! !

Well, I think it’s difficult, so if you use a #2000 file after spraying to smooth out any unevenness, you’ll get a nice finish!

(This is the step I thought of to get a stable and clean finish after failing many times)

The clear finish is blown as slowly and thickly as possible.

If it is too slow, it will become cloudy, but if it dries, it will become glossy as it is.

Why don’t you try it? (Self-responsibility x 2nd time)

Touring across her girlfriend dyed in her own color is the best!

I would be happy if you could say hello if you meet me somewhere! !

I would like to connect with XV1100 owners and all bikers,

Feel free to contact me in the comment section!

I would love to see your custom paint!

Thank you!
